VA
Someone who provides assistance virtually. When people ask for a VA, they often mean something different, or they aren’t sure what they need and just know that term means help in some way. They could mean a designer, writer, Facebook ads manager, etc. This is why we recommend that you have an additional or supplemental title since the term is so confusing. Don’t shy away from VA posts and threads, just make sure you identify what they truly need.

Online Business Manager (OBM)
Someone who provides strategy, oversight, and sometimes implementation of online marketing processes for a business. OBM’s are meant to be permanent fixtures in a business, and work best on retainer offers. Key components to know about an OBM….
- If you are hired by a small business, you will often be asked to provide both strategy and execution.
- If you are hired by a larger business, you will be asked to provide strategy and oversight, but less execution. You’ll be managing a team and will operate more in a project management type role.
- You will need to know the general roles and responsibilities of your team members such as designers, copywriters, FB ads specialists, etc.
Project Manager (PM)
Someone who provides strategy, oversight, and implementation of a specific project for a business. Unlike OBM’s that are meant to be permanent, a Project Manager is hired for a set start/stop project and RARELY does any of the actual execution work. PM’s are hired to oversee teams of subcontractors and freelancers to complete a full project. Sometimes Project Managers bring their own teams to the business.
Freelancer
This shouldn’t be a primary title you use, since it’s meant to be an adjective to a title (i.e Freelance Designer, Freelance Illustrator). It typically is used in creative fields as well (like photography, illustration). If you are looking for longterm work, don’t use this title since it represents a set start and stop time.
